Teddy’s Tales: The Fashionable Dog

Despite my fashion training, I’ve never wanted to put a dog in clothing (Teddy was deeply unimpressed with the first and only raincoat I’d bought Teddy’s Tales: A Schnauzer Spooked) but, perhaps because of my fashion training, I do like to shop for an accessory. So when we took Teddy for a wash and brush up at the groomer and dog store Hair of the Dog on the weekend, I got busy in the collar and lead section.
While I was admiring a particularly smart collar and lead combination in tan webbing tipped with maroon leather, my husband picked up a neckerchief by EdwynUK. I should point out that my husband is no fan of a gussied-up dog. But he announced that he was going to buy this triangle of tan checked linen, resplendent with terrier’s head print, for Teddy
Dog in a bandana? It’s all very hipster mutt and I’m not entirely sure that’s totally Teddy (although with his hefty set of whiskers he is undoubtedly moving with the beardy-boy trend). But by the time we had been shown how the stylish dog about town wears this particular neckerchief, and the plaid number had been threaded onto Teddy’s (new, tan, utilitarian) collar, it made me smile. I was sold.
And that is one of the best things about this innocent little cotton-lined item. According to Louise Brooker of EdwynUK, when dogs appear in such natty attire, good things happen. “In my part of East London you get a lot of Staffy rescue dogs and bull terriers that can make some people a bit afraid. If you put a neckerchief on a dog, it instantly looks friendly. Children feel less wary. A neckerchief can help break down barriers.”
And then there’s the practical appeal: come the searing summer heat, you can dampen down the neckerchief and help keep fido comfortable.
I do realise it’s a slippery slope but, regardless, I shall soon be putting in an order for the red Christmas neckerchief: Teddy will see in the season with style.
